My Week Away

Dear Students,

I have missed you this week. As I expect you know, my dear grandmother (or as I called her, Bubby) passed away Monday morning and I was devastated when I heard the news. Perhaps there is, or has been, someone in your life that you have lost or miss. You hopefully experience support from family and friends to help heal the sadness.

This week, I spoke about my 'Bubby' at her funeral and spent a lot of time with family remembering her funny personality and sharing stories from the past. I'm beginning to feel better. It also means a great deal to me that I work in a community of students and staff who care for each other, particularly when times get tough. Thank you for being part of that community.

News has come to me from Jesse Ketchum that you have earned yourselves a Pizza Party this Friday afternoon for excellent behaviour. I am so very proud of each of you for acting out this month's character trait and being your best selves. Thank you for showing great respect to all the teachers who you welcomed into Room 16 these past few days. (Try to imagine the giant smile I have on my face right now just thinking about my exemplary students!)

As for this weekend's homework, I hope you can read the first post of this blog, to be found in the side panel's Blog Archives section, entitled "News for Kids is Finally Here!" and follow the instructions. I've urged you to:
a) visit the site www.teachkidsnews.com
b) read a news article of YOUR choice
c) write and post a short response about the article on this blog
READING RESPONSE SUCCESS CRITERIA: A thorough response may include the article's title, main idea or subject (i.e. sports, crime, art), 5Ws ( who, when, where, what, why) and any connections you may have ("This article reminded me of...", "The most important point is..."). If you have trouble publishing your response, please email me your response at Dorit.Perlmutter@tdsb.on.ca.

Also, if you haven't had a chance to vote in the Canada's Most Important Person Survey, please do so. Check out the ENTIRE blog and even visit links by scrolling over the images on the side panel. You can also check out recommended Internet sites that are listed at the bottom of the blog.

The theme of the week is Community. This will link to our Social Studies units as we dig deeper into understanding Citizenship related to Canada's geography and Canadian government. What do you remember about Canada and World Connections? How do communities create provinces, territories or regions that are fair, equal and responsible?

Sincerely,
Ms. Perlmutter

I read an article. The topic was arts because I love art. The person I read about was a man named Lee Hadwin. He sketches drawing when he is asleep. So he sleep draws.

I heard about this man before from my brother who read it from the OWL magazine. When Hadwin was little he wanted to draw stuff with details.
And the more he got older his drawings had more detail. And during the day he would say that he does not like art and that he is bad at art.
Hdwin only draws black and white pictures.

Even if he had coloured pencil crayons he would not use them. He draws two drawing in a week but sometimes he does not draw for 3 or 4 months.
Hadwin says that if he drank alcohol then he would draw more drawings. Once when he was sleeping he cut his favorite jeans and made it to an artwork.

The one thing that Hadwin does not want to happen is that he would stop sleep drawing.

  3. The article I picked is "The 20 richest people in the united States". Every year, the Forbes magazine writes a list of the 20 richest people in America. The least richest out of the 20 is the Mats family. They own the biggest candy company. Each member of the family $13 billion. the wealthiest American is Bill Gates. He has $59 billion. Bill Gates donates millions of dollars to charities. In total the top 20 richest Americans have $459 billion.

BLUE JAYS NEW LOGO "LEAKED ONLINE"
    Sports News
The most important point is that the Blue Jays baseball team is going to change their logo. We don't know when but we do know it's gonna be a big event. The Blue Jays want to make their logo look more Canadian, so that is why they are going to change their logo. I like watching baseball because I am a fan of the Blue Jays and I just want to see them win.

  8. I read the article that's called "Extinct" Toad Found In Borneo. It is very interesting and did you know that the scientist found three toads in Borneo (a male, a female and a young toad). The scientists needed to pay a fortune to examine them? What do you think might have encouraged them to find the Rainbow Toad? Maybe you might read this some time.

  9. The article is about ‘’Toronto Gets New Subway Trains’’
In December or January Toronto is getting new subway trains. The new ones look nicer. They will also have more room inside. In every train, all the cars will be open inside. On the old subway used to have poles in the middle of each car. The new cars do not.
I like to get on the 1st car of the train to see a forward view, but I often miss the 1st car. I can move to the 1st car even after I get another. In addition, my little sister’s stroller can move easily.
I’m looking forward to riding on a new TTC.

  10. The article i picked is “Extinct” Rainbow Toad Found In Borneo...
Scientists have found a colourful, spindly-legged toad from borneo, it says the last time anyone had ever seen it was in 1924.
The toad is bright green, purple and red but people call it the Borneo Rainbow Toad. The scientists had found three of them sitting on a tree, the toads are about five centimetres long. They are a male and a female adult and a younger toad.

This is the link to a photo of the Borneo Rainbow Toad just copy and paste it in the url bar:
