Welcome!

Dear Students and Families,

This blog is for Grade 4 and 5 students to continue to reflect on our curriculum.

Each week the blog will be updated with a new post and poll. Select one question in the post to think deeply about and respond in the Comment section below.

January 22, 2012

Dear Friends,

Congratulations to Ziad for his poll making it onto our Blog Survey.  Remember to cast your vote by January 31st.

The Presentation Series
*P.P.T. (People, Places and Things) presentations will begin February 6th and continue through the month of February.  Students are to have their presentation topics chosen and form signed by Tuesday January 24th.  I hope you're excited to share something that you know and care a lot about with us!

The work you do on these presentations takes the place of your Reading Letters.  Presentations will continue in April and May.

Math
*Continue to practice reading and representing whole numbers with 6-digits.  Keep your eyes open for numbers in different media sources such as the newspaper, magazines and on the street for numbers up to and above 100 000 (one hundred thousand).

Use the place value chart to help identify the value of each digit.

How do you write these numbers in standard form?
-80 000 + 300 + 2

-200 000 + 7000 + 200 + 40 +1

-one hundred thousand five hundred forty

*Geometry - Look around.  What shapes do you see? How can you change the way a shape looks?

Think about:
-polygons
-2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes
-reflections and translations
-symmetry

Dance Research and Presentations
*This week you will use your dance research to create a 'poster' for a class presentation.  I hope you collected information on your dance style answering each of the 5W questions and have pictures.

Science and Language
*Your science comic is due this Tuesday January 24th.  Your goal was to ask an open-ended science question about life systems and use scientific terms/evidence in your answer.  It should be easy to read and understand.

Phys. Ed and Health
*Floor Hockey has officially begun!  We've started to practice our stick-handling skills and safely use equipment in the gym.

*This Thursday we will be going on our first afternoon skating adventure.  Let's ensure that we each have the following things:
-skates that fit
-a helmet that fits
-warm clothes (hat, gloves, scarf, jacket)

*Healthy Eating - We will analyze our eating habits and continue to discuss making healthy food choices.  Have you chosen a healthy recipe to add to our class cookbook?

Special Events
*Chinese New Year - Monday, January 23rd.

*Assembly - Monday, January 23rd, afternoon.

*Legislative Assembly of Ontario - Tuesday, January 24th (9:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.)

-explore the chamber
