*NEW INFO: Friday February 17 - March 1

Dear Friends,

Learning Skills Success Criteria for TERM 2 are now posted in the classroom.  What are your learning, social and personal goals for the next 4 months?

Storytelling at Jesse Ketchum          *Storytelling has begun! Students have chosen short stories and teachers are available at recesses and lunches to provide support. The event will happen after March Break, giving you plenty of time to either get on board if you haven't already or to continue practicing!
For Aboriginal people, storytelling is both a gift, and a very old custom, sanctioned by the people, to teach, entertain, and remember.
Criteria for Good Storytelling

Yorkville Art Gallery Walk
*On Wednesday March 7th, we will be taking a neighbourhood stroll in the morning to visit 5 art galleries.
I'm looking parent volunteers! Please hand in the form with your name and signature as soon as possible.

                                                        Visit http://www.kinsmanrobinson.com/

                                                        Artist Norval Morriseau, Aboriginal art

                                                       http://www.leonardogalleries.com/

                                                                 Visit http://www.gevik.com/

PPT - Presentation Series
*Make sure you use the success criteria when preparing for your presentation.  See the side panel for the crieria.

Why are visual aids so useful in a presentation?

What visual aid has been used most effectively so far?

Art and Media
*We are in the process of creating a classroom cookbook.  We identified the features of a recipe.  They may include:
-Name of food or recipe (heading)
-Background or history of the recipe (subheading)
-Ingredient list (subheading)
-Prep time/Cook time
-Instructions (subheading)
-Image
We are typing up our selected recipes on the school computers using the above features.

*Next steps: Analyze cookbook covers.

What features are used?

How does the overall layout and design appeal to you?

Later, we will be creating our own cookbook covers for our classroom cookbook.  Whose cover page will make it onto the final edition?

Math
*Apply our knowledge of transformations, symmetry and congruent shapes to create colourful tessellation patterns.

How are transformations used in this tessellation?

*Next steps: Measurement
-estimate, measure and record length, perimeter and area using a variety of strategies

How do you measure the area of a rectangle?

What is the relationship among different units of measurement?

Science
*Design, build and test structures!

What simple machine is displayed below?
Why do people use this machine?  How does it make work simpler?
What forces are being used?

*We will be working in special groups to read non-fiction texts about science

TAKE THE QUIZ!
True or False: Pulleys and gears change the speed, direction, and motion of, and force exerted on, moving objects.

True or False: It is impossible to measure forces to determine how they affect structures and mechanisms.  This information is not needed to guide the design of new structures and mechanisms.

Drama & Reading
*Learn about the elements of drama to communicate feelings, ideas and stories

The elements of drama are:

1) role/character
(consider the inner and outer life of a character; sustain roles; vary positions -full front, back, profile)

2) Relationship
(between characters)

3) Time and Place
(setting)

4) Tension
(using audio, visual and stage effects like lighting to heighten suspence and engage audience)

5) Focus and Emphasis
(identify key emotions, themes, draw audience attention to specific aspects of drama)

How are the elements of drama used in the above images?

*Continue reading from the novel Run by Eric Walters. Keep a reading journal.  Apply reading strategies, use drama and art to develop your understanding and make connections with the text.

  2. Q:How do you measure the area of a rectangle?
A:I think there is 2 ways. The first is to measure the length and width, and then multiply one by the other. For example, if the width is 4cm and length is 6cm, the area is going to be 24㎠. Because, 4×6 is 24. The other way is to draw the rectangle on graph paper then count the squares in the rectangle. For example, if the width is 5cm and length is 8cm, there is going to be 40 squares of 1㎠. Then you’ll know that the area is 40㎠.

    2. Question: How to find the Area of an triangle?
Answer: First you multiply one side of the triangle onto the other one, as you do it on a square. You will egt the area of a square. But then you divide it in 2 and it equals the Area of the triangle.
Example: There is an equlateral triangle its side is 4 cm. -
      1) 4 times 2=8 cm2
      2) 8:2=4 area of triangle

  3. Q:What simple machine is displayed below?,
What do people use this machine?
A:The simple machine is called Pulley, people use Pulley to pull/push something they can't reach. For example:when someone push the flag so the flag can reach top of a pole, they use pulley to help them.

  4. Analyzing a cover page of cook book
    -Picture
It makes me want to cook or eat the foods in the book.
e.g. angry birds, manga, foods looking delicious.
    -Colourfull/bold title
e.g. COOK BOOK, flavors and fantastic recipes
    -Message
    It’s catchy
    e.g. let’s cook!
I'm soooooo exiting to make the cover page!

  7. These are the answers to the science questions on the blog site.

    1. This simple machine is called a pulley.

    2. They use this machine to lift heavy objects to higher levels.

    3. It makes simpler because you do not have to carry the object.

    4. The force that is being used is 'pull'. As you are pulling on a rope.

    Have a great day.

  12. How do you measure the area of a rectangle?

You need to know that area tells you how much space is inside the rectangle.
A rectangle has 2 equal sides of length and 2 equal sides of width.
Formula: Area = Length x width
There are two ways to find the area of a rectangle.
    1. Multiply the length and the width.
For example, my ruler has a length of 15cm and a width of 3cm.
    Using the formula Area = 15cm x 3cm. The answer is 45㎠

    2. Adding the number of squares.
Using 1 centimetre square grid paper draw the ruler on it.
*Remember to only add the squares inside the drawing
If you add the squares inside the ruler that is 15cm x 3cm
the answer will be 45㎠ (45 squares that are 1㎠ each).

True or False: Pulleys and gears change the speed, direction, and motion of, and force exerted on, moving objects. TRUE

True or False: It is impossible to measure forces to determine how they affect structures and mechanisms. This information is not needed to guide the design of new structures and mechanisms. FALSE

Force is measured in Newton’s. The Builder of anything (elevators) must pay attention to the force that will be on it like total weight (Maximum number of people and weight).
THE NEXT TIME ANYONE IS IN THE ELEVATOR YOU WILL SEE THE SIGN POSTED.

My Dad says in Japan they have so many earthquakes that the designers are making buildings that are able to move shift/twist slightly and not collapse.

    1. I think that it would be amazing to have a gallery walk because I lke art and paintings. Yester yester yester yesterday me and my group of simon, sabrina, daravone, and adea werebuilding a bridge. We also did a wind test on it, the results were- It didnt move. By the way the bridge we made is a x bridge. Now we should test the bridge on how strong and stable it is (pull it down with a special thing).

  28. Q:What simple machine is displayed below?
A: A pulley. It's a machine which for example maybe construction workers use to carry heavy objects.

Q:Why do people use this machine? How does it make work easier?
A:We use pulleys because it would make it easier for people to do our work.We would not have to work so hard.We use pulleys to lift heavy objects. Like those big long machines construction workers use to carry bricks and parts of buildings. Imagine if we had no pulleys and we had to carry those huge bricks and parts of buildings with our hands.
